Robert Boyle, Irish chemist
Robert Boyle (1627-1691), Irish chemist. Boyle was born at Lismore Castle, the seventh son of the 1st Earl of Cork. He was sent to Eton at the age of seven, leaving three years later to tour Europe with his tutor. Boyle established chemistry as a separate science and stressed the need for experimental precision and accurate observation. He rejected the theory that four elements (fire, air, water and earth) were the basic constituents of the Universe and postulated that there were a large number of elements which could not be broken down into simpler chemicals. He formulated Boyles law, which states that for a gas at a constant temperature the product of its pressure and volume is a constant. This engraving by Vertue comes from Birchs The Heads of Illustrious Persons of Great Britain, published at London in 1747

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the esteemed Robert Boyle, an influential Irish chemist of the 17th century. Born at Lismore Castle to noble lineage, Boyle's intellectual journey began at a tender age when he was sent to Eton. However, his thirst for knowledge led him on a transformative European tour alongside his tutor. Boyle's groundbreaking contributions revolutionized the field of chemistry by establishing it as a distinct science. He emphasized the utmost importance of experimental precision and accurate observation, challenging prevailing notions about the composition of the Universe. Rejecting the belief in four elemental constituents—fire, air, water, and earth—Boyle postulated that there existed numerous elements incapable of further chemical breakdown. Among his significant achievements is Boyles law—a fundamental principle stating that at a constant temperature, the product of gas pressure and volume remains constant. This revolutionary concept laid essential groundwork for our understanding of gases and their behavior. The monochromatic engraving captured by Vertue beautifully immortalizes this visionary scientist from Birch's publication "The Heads of Illustrious Persons". With its vertical composition exuding an aura of intellectuality and depth, this image transports us back to Boyle's era—an era marked by scientific exploration and discovery. In this remarkable photograph print from Science Photo Library, we pay homage to Robert Boyle—a brilliant physicist who forever altered our comprehension of matter through his pioneering work in chemistry.
