EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures Mary Emily Hitchens (nee Prinsep), a woman of remarkable history and resilience, in the twilight of her life. Daughter of renowned painter and photographer Sir Charles Robert Prinsep, Mary Emily was born in 1853 in Monkshatch, Surrey, England. In her early years, she was married to Andrew Hichens. The first few decades of her life were marked by tragedy and heartache. Mary Emily's first husband, Andrew Hichens, passed away in 1897, leaving her a young widow with five children to raise. However, she found solace and love once again when she married Hallam Tennyson, the second son of the esteemed poet Alfred Lord Tennyson, in 1908. This photograph was taken in 1916, and the image of Mary Emily, dressed in a simple yet elegant blouse and a warm, cozy shawl, exudes a sense of peace and contentment. The photograph was used as a Christmas greetings card that year, a poignant reminder of the holiday season and the passing of time. Despite the hardships she faced, Mary Emily's life was filled with love and art. Her father's influence is evident in her striking features, and her children carried on the artistic legacy, with her eldest son, John, becoming a successful painter and her second son, Robert, an accomplished sculptor. This photograph is a testament to Mary Emily's strength and resilience, a woman who faced adversity with grace and found happiness in the most unexpected places. It is a snapshot of a bygone era, a reminder of the rich history that lies within the pages of our family albums and the stories that continue to be passed down through generations.
