EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph from the roaring twenties, George Whitelaw's caricatures bring to life the lively atmosphere of Ciros Grill, a premier nightspot in London during the early 20th century. On the left, two beloved stage favourites, Leslie Henson and Ernest Truex, engage in animated storytelling. In the center, General Nevile Campbell, CMG, and Sir William Bull, Bart. MP, the Chairman of the London Unionist MPS and a key figure in the Channel Tunnel project, discuss the menu with Jelmini, presumably the manager or maître d'. On the right, we catch a glimpse of Nick Prinsep, brother of Tony Prinsep, the well-known theatrical manager, and Anita Elson, who was starring in Lucky Girl at the London Pavilion at the time. Behind the bar, the two skilled mixologists shake up a new Ciros special aperitif. This photograph, dated 1929, offers a fascinating glimpse into London's vibrant nightlife scene of the era, filled with personalities, entertainment, and the art of mixology.
