EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, a team of dedicated researchers from the Natural History Museum in London are seen meticulously excavating the remains of a Baryonyx walkeri, an extinct dinosaur, at the Ockley brick pit in Surrey, England, in June 1983. The Baryonyx, a member of the Carnosauria suborder of dinosaurs, was a large, meat-eating reptile that roamed Europe during the Late Jurassic period, around 155 million years ago. The team's focused expressions and the surrounding dirt and bone fragments speak to the arduous and painstaking process of unearthing these ancient fossils. The Baryonyx, with its distinctive long, narrow snout and clawed hands, was a significant discovery, providing valuable insights into the anatomy and evolution of dinosaurs and their ancestors, the Archosauria. As part of the Diapsida subclass of reptiles, the Baryonyx shares characteristics with modern-day reptiles, such as a diapsid skull, where the skull is divided into two parts by two openings. The Baryonyx is also classified as a Megalosauroidea and a member of the Baryonychinae family, which includes other large, carnivorous dinosaurs like the Megalosaurus. The discovery of the Baryonyx at Ockley was a crucial addition to the scientific understanding of the anatomy and evolution of dinosaurs and their ancestors. The team's diligent work, as seen in this photograph, was essential in bringing this extinct creature back to life, allowing us to learn more about the fascinating world of dinosaurs and their place in Earth's history.
