EDITORS COMMENTS
Bridge House in Ambleside, Cumbria, is a charming architectural gem nestled amidst the picturesque landscape of the English Lake District. This small bridge, built in the 17th century, serves as more than just a means of crossing a stream. It was constructed to connect a house and its gardens, as well as orchards, to the other side. The Bridge House, which sits atop the bridge, was originally built as a summer-house, providing its occupants with a tranquil retreat. It is believed that the house was built over the Stock Ghyll to evade land tax, making it an ingenious solution to a common problem during that era. Over the centuries, the Bridge House has served various purposes. It has functioned as an apple store, a residence, and even an information centre. Today, it continues to captivate visitors as a shop for the National Trust, where they can purchase souvenirs and learn about the rich history of Ambleside and its surroundings. This photograph, taken by Eric de Mare between 1945 and 1980, captures the Bridge House in its timeless beauty. The image showcases the bridge's intricate design, with the house nestled atop it, surrounded by the flowing water and lush greenery. The scene is a testament to the enduring charm of this unique structure and the history it holds.
