Found only in northern Australia from the Kimberleys to NW Queensland. Other races found right throughout Australia. Nests in holes in banks but forages in tree crowns of woodlands and eucalypt forests and trees along dry watercourses and into arid scrublands. Also wet coastal eucalypt forests and mangroves
