Dislocated knee of baby, X-ray
Congenital knee dislocation. Coloured X-ray of the dislocated and twisted knee of a female baby. The lower leg bones have twisted 180 degrees to the femur (at top). The tibia (shin bone), the thicker lower leg bone, should be on the right of the fibula (thinner lower leg bone). The bones on either side of the knee joint should also line up. Dislocation can occur due to injury such as a hard knock or twisting movement, or may be a congenital (present from birth) abnormality such as here. It can cause considerable pain. Treatment is by manual manipulation to relocate the bones and they may have to be immobilised to set them in place. For images showing the manipulation of the leg bones to their correct position, see M330/1561 and M330/1562

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases a dislocated knee of a baby, revealing the intricate details through a colored X-ray. The image depicts a female infant with her lower leg bones twisted 180 degrees to the femur, resulting in a congenital knee dislocation. In normal circumstances, the tibia should be positioned on the right side of the fibula, and both sides of the knee joint should align perfectly. Dislocations like this can occur due to traumatic injuries or as an abnormality present since birth. Regardless of its origin, this condition causes significant pain for the affected child. Treatment involves manual manipulation to relocate and set the bones in their correct position. Immobilization may also be necessary during recovery. The circular shape of this X-ray highlights not only the twisted nature of the knee but also emphasizes how delicate and complex our joints are. This image serves as a powerful reminder of both medical advancements and challenges faced by healthcare professionals in diagnosing and treating such conditions. Science Photo Library provides invaluable resources for medical professionals specializing in orthopedics and pediatrics who seek visual aids for diagnosis or educational purposes. It offers insight into various disorders affecting human anatomy while showcasing cutting-edge technology such as x-ray machines used in pediatric radiography.
