EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable artwork from the 19th century, featuring an array of beetles. At the center of attention is the Chilean stag beetle, also known as Darwins beetle, which holds historical significance as it was collected by none other than Charles Darwin himself during his renowned voyage on HMS Beagle between 1831 and 1836. This particular piece originates from Encyclopaedia Metropolitana, a comprehensive encyclopedia published in London from 1817 to 1845. The plate itself dates back to 1834 and is part of this extensive collection that spans across thirty volumes with an astounding total of over twenty-two thousand pages and five hundred sixty-five plates. The intricate illustration captures not only the Chilean stag beetle but also various other species such as Elaphrus uliginosus, Omophron limbatum, Hydrous piceus, Necrophorus vespillo, Passalus interruptus, Drilus flavescens, Tillus mutillarius, Uleiota flavipes, Tachys minuta, Molorchus abbreviatus among many others. With its monochrome aesthetic and meticulous detailings depicting these fascinating creatures in their natural form and habitat; this artwork serves as a testament to both British history and zoological exploration during the early years of entomology. A true treasure for nature enthusiasts and collectors alike!
