Engraving showing the scene on the deck of HMS Discovery at the end of her Arctic expedition, Portsmouth, 1876. In 1875 the British Admiralty sent Captain George Nares with two ships, HMS Alert and HMS Discovery, to make an attempt to reach the North Pole via Smith Sound. The attempt was unsuccessful, but a new furthest North record was set, the coasts of Greenland and Ellesmere Island were charted and much scientific data gathered. The image shows the scene, in the autumn of 1876, as the sailors are re-united with their loved ones after a year away and the excited public is welcomed aboard the ship
