John Evelyn (1620-1706): A Portrait of a Prominent English Diarist and Chronicler of Contemporary Events This evocative portrait captures the face of John Evelyn, an English diarist, chronicler of contemporary events, and Treasurer of Greenwich Hospital. The image, taken in 1706, reveals a man of considerable intellect and refinement, with a long, curly, full head of hair, framing a thoughtful and introspective expression. Evelyn was born in 1620, during a time of great change and upheaval in England. He was educated at Westminster School and the University of Oxford, and went on to become a prominent figure in London society. His diaries, which he began keeping at the age of 17, provide invaluable insights into the social, political, and cultural history of the late 17th century. As a chronicler of contemporary events, Evelyn's writings offer a rich and detailed record of the period, from the Great Fire of London in 1666 to the Glorious Revolution of 1688. He was also an accomplished author, publishing numerous works on a wide range of subjects, including natural history, architecture, and horticulture. Evelyn's service to Greenwich Hospital began in 1655, when he was appointed as a Commissioner. He went on to become Treasurer in 1671, a position he held until his death in 1706. The hospital, which was founded by Henry VIII in 1502, provided care for soldiers and sailors, as well as for the poor and elderly. This portrait, with its dark background and somber tone, conveys a sense of the historical significance of Evelyn's life and work. It is a reminder of the important role that diarists and chroniclers play in recording the past, and of the enduring value of their writings in helping us to understand the complexities of history.
