Blind spinning girl - Rangoon
Blind spinning girl - Rangoon - Kemmendine School for the Blind I asked if the girls would let me take their pictures and the matron spread a mat under a tree and the sweet faced girl who winds the bobbins on her hand, operated the wheel, moved her spindles and thread out, her face all smiles. Just as I was about to snap it, she remembered her hair was down loose and gathered it into a knot, to look pretty. Then the others joined her with knitting, crochet, and a large book of Braille. They all seemed pleased by the attention, as careful of their looks as though they could see. Date: 1952

1952 Asked Blind Burma Burmese Faced Matron Myanmar Pictures Rangoon Spinning Spread Sweet
EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph taken in 1952, a young blind girl from the Kemmendine School for the Blind in Rangoon, Burma (now Myanmar), spins thread with a radiant smile on her face. The matron of the school had spread a mat under a shady tree, inviting the girls to gather for a photo session. The girl, who winds bobbins on her hand, operates the spinning wheel, moves her spindles, and threads out the yarn, is all engrossed in her work. Just as the photographer was about to capture the moment, she paused to gather her loose hair into a neat knot, revealing her thoughtfulness and care for her appearance. Her sweet expression and the serene setting under the tree add to the enchanting scene. The other girls in the photograph join her, each engaged in their own crafts - knitting, crochet, or reading from a large Braille book. Their joy and contentment are palpable, as they seem to relish the attention and the opportunity to showcase their skills. This photograph, taken in the 1950s, offers a glimpse into the lives of these girls, who, despite their visual impairments, are focused, determined, and proud of their accomplishments. The image is a testament to their resilience, creativity, and the nurturing environment of the Kemmendine School for the Blind.
