This photograph captures a bustling scene outside the Wells Fargo general office in New York City during the late 19th century. The image showcases the essential role that horses played in transportation and delivery during this era. Wells Fargo & Co. , founded by Henry Wells and William George Fargo, initially focused on transporting gold from the west to the east coast of America after the Californian Gold Rush. However, they quickly expanded their operations into banking and established a stagecoach network that dominated business in the West by 1866. In this snapshot frozen in time, men can be seen diligently loading horse-drawn vans with barrels, crates, and parcels. The sight of these hardworking individuals maneuvering wheelbarrows filled with goods adds to the sense of industry and activity surrounding them. The presence of horses is prominent throughout this image as they stand patiently alongside their handlers ready for another day's work. These noble animals were an integral part of daily life back then – reliable companions who helped transport goods across vast distances.
