The Flight Into Egypt, c. 1652-1654. Creator: Herman van Swanevelt (Dutch, c. 1600-1655)
The Flight Into Egypt, c. 1652-1654. This series by Herman Swanevelt, The Flight into Egypt, illustrates an event from the New Testament of the Bible. Joseph, Mary, and Christ fled into Egypt to escape King Herods persecution. Traditionally represented as a single image, Swanevelt enlarged the story into four scenes. The Holy family is first shown traveling with three angels behind them, then Joseph helps Mary off the donkey, next Joseph leads the donkey to water as Mary changes the child, and finally the family is at rest. However, the main focus of each of these prints is the depiction of landscape, a genre that reached unprecedented levels of popularity during the 1600s. The scenery, looking much more like the Italian countryside than Egypt, was inspired by Swanevelts paintings. Although he was Dutch, he spent most of his career in Paris and Rome. As a painter, he was known for his ability to convey warm, glowing sunlight, a quality also found in his etchings

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures "The Flight Into Egypt" series by Herman van Swanevelt, a Dutch artist from the 17th century. The artwork portrays an event from the New Testament of the Bible where Joseph, Mary, and Christ fled to Egypt to escape King Herod's persecution. Unlike traditional representations, Swanevelt expanded the story into four scenes. In each scene, the focus is not only on depicting the Holy family but also on showcasing breathtaking landscapes. Landscape painting was immensely popular during this era, and Swanevelt's prints exemplify his mastery in capturing warm and glowing sunlight. Interestingly, despite being Dutch by nationality, he spent most of his career in Paris and Rome. The first scene shows the Holy family traveling with three angels following them closely. In the second scene, Joseph assists Mary as she dismounts from their donkey. The third scene depicts Joseph leading their donkey towards water while Mary attends to baby Jesus' needs. Finally, they find rest in a serene setting portrayed in the fourth scene. Swanevelt's inspiration for these landscapes came from his own paintings which often resembled Italian countryside rather than Egypt itself. This particular print showcases his ability to convey natural beauty through etchings. Presented by Heritage Art/Heritage Images (not affiliated with any company or commercial use), this print invites viewers to appreciate both religious narrative and artistic talent intertwined within one masterpiece.
