Waylands Smithy, Oxfordshire, UK
Waylands Smithy, Oxfordshire, UK. This is a Neolithic long barrow and chamber tomb, which excavations in 1962-63 proved was built in two different time periods. A timber oval barrow was built around 3700 BC and a stone chambered long barrow was built around 3400 BC. Inside the timber chamber, fourteen articulated and disarticulated bodies were discovered and eight skeletons, one of a child, were found in the long barrow during excavations in 1919. Waylands Smithy was named by Saxon settlers who thought the tomb was the work of one of their Gods, Wayland the Smith

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Waylands Smithy, a remarkable Neolithic long barrow and chamber tomb located in Oxfordshire, UK. The site's historical significance is unraveled through excavations conducted in the 20th century. These findings revealed that the structure was built during two distinct time periods. Around 3700 BC, an oval barrow made of timber was constructed, followed by a stone chambered long barrow around 3400 BC. The exploration of this ancient burial ground has yielded fascinating discoveries. Inside the timber chamber, archaeologists unearthed fourteen articulated and disarticulated bodies, shedding light on burial practices of that era. Additionally, during excavations carried out in 1919, eight skeletons were found within the long barrow - one belonging to a child. Waylands Smithy owes its name to Saxon settlers who attributed its creation to their deity known as Wayland the Smith. This monument stands as a testament to human ingenuity and reverence for ancestors throughout history. The image itself captures the essence of this archaeological marvel with dappled light filtering through surrounding trees casting intriguing shadows upon the stones. It evokes a sense of awe and curiosity about our prehistoric past while highlighting Europe's rich cultural heritage.
