Aviation Fuel Bowser at Brussells Airport
Aviation fuel is a specialized type of petroleum-based fuel used to power aircraft. It is generally of a higher quality than fuels used in less critical applications such as heating or road transport, and often contains additives to reduce the risk of icing or explosion due to high temperatures, amongst other properties. Any fuelling operation can be very dangerous, and aviation fuelling has a number of unique characteristics which must be accommodated. As an aircraft flies through the air, it can accumulate a charge of static electricity. If this is not dissipated before fuelling, an electric arc can occur which may ignite fuel vapours. To prevent this, aircraft are electrically bonded to the fuelling apparatus before fuelling begins, and are not disconnected until fuelling is complete. Some regions require that the aircraft and/or fuel truck be grounded as well

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of aviation fuel operations at Brussels Airport. The image showcases an Aviation Fuel Bowser, a specialized tanker truck used to transport and supply high-quality petroleum-based fuel for aircraft. Unlike fuels utilized in everyday applications like heating or road transport, aviation fuel is meticulously formulated with additives that reduce the risk of icing or explosion due to extreme temperatures. Fuelling an aircraft is a hazardous task, demanding utmost caution and adherence to unique safety protocols. One such characteristic involves preventing static electricity build-up on the aircraft during flight, which can potentially ignite fuel vapours when refuelling. To mitigate this danger, before fuelling commences, the aircraft is electrically bonded to the fuelling apparatus and remains connected until the process concludes. Additionally, certain regions mandate grounding both the aircraft and fuel truck as an added precautionary measure. The mesmerizing night-time ambiance adds allure to this photograph as it highlights how these critical operations continue around-the-clock at airports worldwide. It serves as a reminder of the intricate processes involved in keeping our skies safe and ensuring seamless air travel experiences for passengers globally. Captured by OPEN from Science Photo Library, this stunning print not only showcases technological marvels but also underscores the importance of precision engineering and safety measures within aviation's intricate ecosystem.
