EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking handcoloured copperplate engraving, taken from Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," published in Florence in 1834, captures an intriguing moment in the history of the Kanem-Bornu Empire in the 19th century. At the center of the image stands the Sheikh of Bornu, a powerful ruler of the Kanem-Bornu Kingdom, which spanned what is now northern Nigeria and the Chad Basin. Surrounding him are two of his bodyguards, one mounted on a horse and the other a Kanembu lancer, ready for battle. The mounted bodyguard wears a flowing robe adorned with intricate patterns and a tall, conical hat, while carrying a curved sword and shield. The lancer, on the other hand, is dressed in a short tunic and a protective skirt, with a bow and quiver of arrows slung over his shoulder. To the Sheikh's left, a Munga archer stands at attention, his bow strung and an arrow nocked, his body covered in a loincloth and a protective shield. The Munga were a group of warriors from the Kanem-Bornu Empire, known for their archery skills. This image provides a glimpse into the military might and cultural richness of the Kanem-Bornu Empire during the 19th century. The meticulous detail in the handcoloured engraving highlights the intricacies of the costumes and weapons of these bodyguards, offering a unique window into the past.
