St. Jerome, 1460-1470. Creator: Unknown
St. Jerome, 1460-1470. Produced in the second half of the 15th century in Germany and France, metal cuts created a distinctive decorative effect. The craftsman first engraved the plate with the outline of the subject. Then large, plain surface areas, which would print as an unrelieved black, were broken up using punches and stamps. There are only three impressions known of Saint Jerome, but this one is perhaps the most fascinating because it remains attached to the binding of William Duranduss Rationale divinorum offciorum, into which it was glued near the end of the 1400s. Published in Basel before 1477, the book was the most authoritative medieval compendium of church and liturgical practice

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a rare and enigmatic piece of art from the 15th century, depicting St. Jerome. Created by an unknown artist in Germany and France during the second half of the century, this metal cut print displays a distinctive decorative effect that was achieved through meticulous craftsmanship. The process involved engraving the plate with the outline of St. Jerome before breaking up large plain surface areas using punches and stamps, resulting in an unrelieved black background. What makes this particular impression even more fascinating is its attachment to William Duranduss' Rationale divinorum offciorum binding, where it was glued sometime in the late 1400s. Only three known impressions of Saint Jerome exist, making this print all the more valuable for art enthusiasts and historians alike. Published in Basel before 1477, Duranduss' book served as a comprehensive compendium on church and liturgical practices during medieval times. With its hand-colored details adding depth and vibrancy to the image, this remarkable artifact now resides at The Cleveland Museum of Art. Thanks to Heritage Art/Heritage Images for capturing and preserving this invaluable piece of history for generations to come.
