Moai statue of Easter Island with pukao topknot
Easter Island, also called Rapa Nui, is most famous for its large moai statues that were carved by native peoples between 1250 and 1500. The island is also considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site and much of the islands land belongs to the Rapa Nui National Park. The production and transportation of the 887 statues are considered remarkable creative and physical feats. The tallest moai erected was almost 10 metres (33 ft) high and weighed 82 tons. Almost all moai have overly large heads three-eighths the size of the whole statue. Some moai had pukao on their heads; these were carved out of red scoria, a very light rock from a quarry at Puna Pau. Red itself is considered a sacred color in Polynesia. The added pukau suggest a further status to the moai

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic Moai statue of Easter Island, adorned with a striking pukao topknot. Known as Rapa Nui to the locals, this remote island is renowned for its magnificent moai statues that were meticulously carved by native peoples centuries ago. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Easter Island holds immense cultural and historical significance. The sheer creativity and physical prowess required to produce and transport these 887 statues are truly remarkable. Standing tall at nearly 10 meters (33 ft) high and weighing an astonishing 82 tons, these monolithic figures possess disproportionately large heads that make them instantly recognizable. What sets this particular moai apart is the addition of a pukao on its head. Carved from red scoria, a lightweight rock sourced from Puna Pau quarry, these vibrant topknots elevate the status of the already majestic moai. Red holds sacred symbolism in Polynesia, further enhancing the spiritual aura surrounding these ancient sculptures. Photographed against an expansive sky backdrop in vivid color, this image transports us back in time to witness the awe-inspiring history of Easter Island firsthand. With no people present in sight, we can fully immerse ourselves in the tranquility and grandeur of Rapa Nui National Park. Phil Marion's masterful photography captures not only a stone object but also immortalizes human representation through art. This print serves as both a visual feast for travel enthusiasts and an homage to one of humanity's most extraordinary achievements – an international landmark that continues to captivate visitors from around the world.
