Carriage and Wagon Stamping (No. 18) Shop in 1915
This image of the Carriage and Wagon Stamping (No.18) Shop was taken in March 1915. Although no men are in shot, it shows the busy, dirty and hot nature of this workshop. The Stamping Shop made all sorts of components for coaches and wagons, such as draw hooks, and brake rigging. During the war the Government requested hundreds of specialised carriages and wagons and the stamping shop would have been on hand to produce the relevant parts. In the centre of the photograph is a stationary boiler - the source of power for the steam hammers

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the bustling Carriage and Wagon Stamping (No. 18) Shop in March 1915. Despite the absence of men in this shot, the image vividly portrays the dynamic atmosphere of this workshop. The scene is a testament to its busy, dirty, and hot nature, with workers tirelessly crafting various components for coaches and wagons. In those challenging times of World War I, when the Government urgently required hundreds of specialized carriages and wagons, this stamping shop played a crucial role in meeting their demands. It stood ready to produce essential parts like draw hooks and brake rigging that were integral for these transportation vehicles. At the heart of this photograph stands a stationary boiler - an indispensable source of power for the steam hammers that resonated throughout the workshop. This powerful machinery was instrumental in shaping metal into intricate forms with precision. As we gaze upon this historic snapshot from Swindon Works' Carriage and Wagon Stamping (No. 18) Shop during wartime, it serves as a poignant reminder of human ingenuity amidst adversity. It encapsulates not only the industrial prowess but also pays homage to countless unsung heroes who worked diligently behind-the-scenes to support their nation's war efforts. The STEAM Museum of GWR preserves such invaluable glimpses into our past; they provide us with insights into significant moments that shaped our world today while honoring those who contributed selflessly during times fraught with challenges.
