Yellow-eyed penguin
Yellow-eyed penguin (Megadyptes antipodes). This penguin gets its name from the colour of its eyes and the surrounding eye feathers. These features appear at maturity: 3 years for females and 5 years for males. It stands 60 centimetres high and weighs up to 6 kilograms. It is unusual in that it is a solitary penguin. The yellow-eyed penguin mates for life, and builds its nest at the base of a tree in a coastal forest. It is an endangered species due to the loss of nesting grounds and predation by wild cats, stoats and dogs. The yellow-eyed penguin is thought to be the most ancient of the penguin species.
