WMAP spacecraft, artwork

WMAP (Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe) spacecraft. Computer artwork of the WMPAP spacecraft travelling towards the second Lagrangian point (L2), situated about 1.5 million kilometres from Earth (blue sphere) in the opposite direction to the Sun (sphere at far left). It has used the Moon (above right of Earth) as a slingshot to gain velocity for the trip. Once at the L2 the WMAP will study the Cosmic Microwave Background, the radiation left over from the Big Bang. WMAP was launched on 30th June 2001 and commenced its sky survey on 11th February 2003

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork showcases the WMAP spacecraft, a remarkable feat of technology and scientific exploration. In this computer-generated image, we witness the WMAP spacecraft embarking on its journey towards the second Lagrangian point (L2), located 1.5 million kilometers away from Earth in the opposite direction to the Sun. The spacecraft's trajectory is depicted with precision as it utilizes a slingshot maneuver around the Moon, cleverly harnessing its gravitational pull to gain velocity for its mission. Once positioned at L2, an ideal vantage point far beyond our planet's atmosphere, WMAP will commence its study of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). This radiation is a remnant from the Big Bang that birthed our universe. Launched on June 30th, 2001, this groundbreaking science satellite embarked on its sky survey on February 11th, 2003. Equipped with advanced measuring instruments and cutting-edge technology, WMAP aims to unravel mysteries surrounding our cosmic origins and deepen our understanding of astrophysics and cosmology. As we gaze at this awe-inspiring illustration capturing humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge about space and time itself, we are reminded of how far we have come in exploring our solar system and beyond. The WMAP spacecraft symbolizes mankind's insatiable curiosity and unwavering commitment to uncovering secrets hidden within the vast expanse of our cosmos.
