Prehistoric pond. Computer artwork of life in and around a freshwater pond during the Upper Devonian period (around 360 million years ago). In the foreground are two Ichthyostega tetrapods. Basically half fish-half land animal, these creatures are each about three feet long. Between them in the water are several marine arthropods known as trilobites. Further beyond in the water is a 12 inch long Bothriolepis prehistoric fish (Placoderm). Most of the plant life is varieties of fern, including the tall trees known as Archaeopteris

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the Upper Devonian period, approximately 360 million years ago. The artwork depicts a prehistoric pond teeming with life and offers a glimpse into an ancient ecosystem. In the foreground, we are introduced to two remarkable creatures called Ichthyostega tetrapods - fascinating beings that were part fish and part land animal, measuring about three feet long each. As we explore further into the water, our attention is drawn to several trilobites, marine arthropods gracefully navigating their aquatic habitat. Among them stands a Bothriolepis prehistoric fish, boasting an impressive length of 12 inches. The plant life surrounding this vibrant scene consists mainly of various fern species, including towering Archaeopteris trees. This mesmerizing illustration not only showcases the diversity of life during this era but also sheds light on Earth's evolutionary history. It serves as a testament to the incredible adaptations and transformations that have occurred over millions of years. Immerse yourself in this snapshot from our planet's past and marvel at the intricate web of biological interactions that once thrived in freshwater ponds like these. Walter Myers' meticulous artistry brings forth both scientific accuracy and artistic beauty in capturing this moment from prehistory for all nature enthusiasts and science aficionados alike to appreciate.
