Pain pathways, artwork

Pain pathways, computer artwork. The heat of the candle is detected by nociceptors (special sensory nerve endings) in the finger. The pain impulse is passed via the peripheral nervous system to the spinal cord (bottom right) where the nerve synapses with neurons (nerve cells) in the dorsal horn of the grey matter. The signal is then sent up the spinal cord, through the white matter, to the brain stem and synapses with neurons in the medulla (white triangle at base of brain) and the thalamus (white ovals at base of brain). From these points the signal is spread to other parts of the brain. The blue arrow represents a modifying neuron from the brain, which provides pain relief

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork titled "Pain Pathways" takes us on a visual journey through the intricate network of our nervous system. Against a stark white background, the image showcases the complexity of pain perception and how it is transmitted within our bodies. At the center of attention is a candle flame, symbolizing an external thermal stimulus that triggers nociceptors in our finger - specialized sensory nerve endings responsible for detecting pain. From there, we witness the remarkable process as the pain impulse travels through our peripheral nervous system towards the spinal cord. Intriguingly, this print highlights how nerve synapses occur in the dorsal horn of grey matter within the spinal cord before ascending upwards. The signal then reaches crucial areas such as the brain stem and thalamus, represented by white ovals at its base. These points serve as vital hubs where information from painful stimuli spreads to various regions throughout our brain. Notably, an essential element depicted here is a blue arrow representing a modifying neuron originating from our brain. This neuron plays a significant role in providing pain relief and altering perception. Overall, this thought-provoking illustration beautifully captures both physiological processes and neurological aspects related to pain sensation. It serves as a reminder of just how intricately connected every part of our body is when it comes to perceiving discomfort or experiencing relief.
