Muonionalusta meteorite, macrophotograph
Macrophotograph of the surfcace of the iron fine octahedrite type meteorite Muonionalusta, found in Sweden. The Widmanstatten pattern of lines on the newly-cut surface are produced by the edges of crystals in the meteorite. The pattern was formed about 1 billion years ago when the iron mass solidified in one of several minor planets between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. These planets have since been disrupted to form the asteroid belt. The fragments resulting from collisions between asteroids are deflected into orbits that cross the path of the Earth. Analysis of meteorites can provide inform- ation on the composition of the early solar system. Object size of this close-up: approx. 10mm

EDITORS COMMENTS
This macrophotograph showcases the mesmerizing surface of the Muonionalusta meteorite, a fine octahedrite type found in Sweden. The image reveals the intricate Widmanstatten pattern of lines that adorn the freshly cut surface, created by the edges of crystals within this extraterrestrial rock. Remarkably, this pattern was formed approximately 1 billion years ago when a massive iron mass solidified within one of several minor planets situated between Mars and Jupiter. These ancient planets eventually collided and fragmented, giving birth to what we now know as the asteroid belt. As these fragments collide with one another, they are deflected into orbits that intersect with Earth's path. Meteorites like Muonionalusta provide invaluable insights into our early solar system's composition and evolution. In this close-up view, measuring around 10mm in size, we can marvel at the crystalline structure and unique patterns etched onto this celestial artifact. It serves as a tangible reminder of our interconnectedness with outer space and offers glimpses into cosmic phenomena that occurred billions of years ago. Alfred Pasieka's expert photography allows us to appreciate both the scientific significance and aesthetic beauty encapsulated within this small section of an otherworldly deposit. Through such images, we gain a deeper understanding not only of our planet but also our place in the vast expanse beyond it.
