Middle ear bone, SEM

Middle ear bone. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the human middle ear, showing the stapes (ring-shaped). The stapes is one of three bones (known as the ossicles) in the middle ear that conduct sound waves from the outer ear to the inner ear. Vibrations from the eardrum are passed to the malleus and then the stapes via the incus. The stapes transmits these vibrations to the fluid-filled cochlear of the inner ear where they are converted to nerve impulses. Magnification: x100 when printed 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of the middle ear bone, specifically the stapes. Colored with vibrant hues, this scanning electron micrograph (SEM) offers a glimpse into the fascinating world of human anatomy and hearing biology. The stapes, resembling a delicate ring-shaped structure, is one of three ossicles found in the middle ear. These tiny bones play a crucial role in transmitting sound waves from the outer ear to the inner ear. As vibrations pass through the eardrum, they are relayed to the malleus and then onto the stapes via another bone called incus. What makes this process truly remarkable is how these vibrations are converted into nerve impulses within our fluid-filled cochlea located in our inner ear. The stapes acts as a bridge between these two regions, efficiently transmitting sound signals for further processing by our auditory system. Steve Gschmeissner's masterful SEM technique has magnified this image 100 times its original size when printed at 10 centimeters wide. Through his lens, we gain an appreciation for even nature's smallest wonders – like this stirrup-like bone that contributes immensely to our sense of hearing. Whether you're fascinated by biology or simply intrigued by anatomical marvels, this false-colored SEM print serves as a testament to both scientific exploration and artistic expression.
