EDITORS COMMENTS
This woodcut portrait, captured by Todd-White Art Photography, transports us back to the 16th century and introduces us to Melampulach, an enigmatic Arab physician. The artwork originates from Cosmographie universelle (1575), a remarkable book penned by the renowned French explorer and writer Andre Thevet. Melampulach's intriguing background is revealed through the accompanying text. It suggests that he may have been Jewish and describes his final resting place atop a mountain in or near Gazera, a region now known as Israel. This snippet forms part of Chapter VII in Book VI of Thevet's extensive work, which delves into the ancient cities of Jaffe (Jaffa) and Rama. The woodcut portrait itself exudes an air of classical elegance. Melampulach gazes confidently at the viewer with piercing eyes, his features rendered meticulously by the skilled artist. Dressed in traditional attire reflective of his Middle Eastern heritage, this distinguished figure embodies both intellect and authority. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, this image serves as a historical artifact shedding light on medicine during antiquity. Melampulach's profession as a physician highlights the importance placed on healthcare even centuries ago. Todd-White Art Photography has masterfully preserved this piece of cultural history for modern audiences to appreciate. Through their lens, we are granted access to not only Melampulach's likeness but also glimpses into ancient Israel's past – an invaluable contribution to our understanding of human civilization.
