Kurchatov and Ioffe, Soviet physicists
Igor Vasilyevich Kurchatov (1903-1960, left) and Abram Fedorovich Ioffe (1880-1960, right), Soviet physicists. In the 1930s, Kurchatov supervised the construction of what was then the worlds largest cyclotron particle accelerator. He also led the work on the USSRs first atomic bomb (1949), hydrogen bomb (1953) and the worlds first nuclear power plant (1954). Ioffe (sometimes spelt Jaffe) studied electromagnetism, radiology, and semiconductors. He also oversaw the expansion of work in radioactivity, superconductivity and nuclear physics. In 1918, he became the head of what is now called the Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute in his honour. Photographed in Russia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the brilliant minds of two influential Soviet physicists, Igor Vasilyevich Kurchatov and Abram Fedorovich Ioffe. Standing side by side in front of a majestic tree, these distinguished scientists symbolize the remarkable advancements made in nuclear physics during the 20th century. On the left, Igor Kurchatov, known for his exceptional leadership skills, supervised the construction of the world's largest cyclotron particle accelerator in the 1930s. His groundbreaking work extended far beyond this achievement as he spearheaded crucial projects such as developing the USSR's first atomic bomb in 1949, hydrogen bomb in 1953, and even constructing the world's inaugural nuclear power plant in 1954. To his right stands Abram Ioffe, a pioneer who delved into various fields including electromagnetism, radiology, and semiconductors. As head of what is now called the Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute since 1918, he oversaw significant expansions in radioactivity research along with superconductivity studies. Together as a duo representing scientific excellence within Russia's rich history, Kurchatov and Ioffe embody intellectuality and innovation. This group portrait captures their profound contributions to particle physics while highlighting their immense impact on shaping our understanding of nuclear science. The print from Science Photo Library serves as a powerful reminder of these extraordinary individuals' legacies that continue to inspire generations of aspiring scientists worldwide.
