Heart and red blood cells (erythrocytes), computer artwork

Heart and red blood cells (erythrocytes), computer artwork. The heart is a hollow muscle that pumps blood around the body. Deoxygenated blood from the body is carried into the right side of the heart (left) via the vena cava (cut vessel left of arch). From here, the blood travels into the lungs via the pulmonary artery (right), where it is oxygenated. The blood is then carried into the left side of the heart (right) before travelling back into the body via the aorta (arch), where it can exchange oxygen for carbon dioxide and start the cycle all over again

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the intricate beauty of the human heart and its vital role in our circulatory system. In this computer artwork, we are presented with a stunning visualization of the heart, surrounded by a sea of vibrant red blood cells known as erythrocytes. The heart, a hollow muscular organ, serves as an extraordinary pump that tirelessly propels oxygenated blood throughout our bodies. The journey begins with deoxygenated blood entering the right side of the heart through the vena cava, depicted here as a cut vessel to the left of the arch. From there, this life-giving fluid travels to our lungs via the pulmonary artery on the right side of this image where it undergoes oxygenation. Once enriched with oxygen, this revitalized blood returns to enter into the left side of our heart before embarking on its voyage back into our body through another crucial vessel called the aorta located at top center - allowing for gas exchange between oxygen and carbon dioxide along its path. This awe-inspiring illustration not only highlights how these essential processes occur within us but also emphasizes their normality and significance in maintaining good health. It is an artistic representation that beautifully captures both anatomical precision and scientific wonderment.
