Fungal infections

Fungal infections, Artwork. Colonies of fungi on a petri dish with examples of fungal skin infections. In the background are fungal hyphae (filaments). Many fungi live on our body without causing any problems. However, a weak immune system or course of antibiotics can lead to the fungi proliferating and infecting the skin. One of the most common fungal skin infections is ringworm (tinea), which can be caused by three types of fungi, Trichophyton sp. Microsporum sp. and Epidermophyton sp.. Other fungi that can infect the skin include Candida albicans, which causes thrush, and Malassezia sp. which cause scaly flaky rashes. Treatment is with antifungal drugs

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the intricate world of fungal infections. The image features colonies of fungi flourishing on a petri dish, accompanied by examples of fungal skin infections. In the background, one can observe the fascinating filaments known as fungal hyphae. While many fungi coexist harmlessly with our bodies, certain factors such as a weakened immune system or antibiotic usage can trigger their proliferation and subsequent infection of the skin. One prevalent type of fungal skin infection is ringworm (tinea), caused by three distinct types of fungi: Trichophyton sp. , Microsporum sp. , and Epidermophyton sp. . Additionally, other culprits like Candida albicans, responsible for thrush, and Malassezia sp. , which leads to scaly flaky rashes, can also invade our skin. Thankfully, treatment for these conditions involves antifungal drugs that combat the invasive nature of these microorganisms. This artwork not only highlights the beauty found within biology but also serves as a reminder that even seemingly harmless organisms have the potential to cause disorder in our bodies. With its detailed depiction and scientific accuracy, this print provides an insightful glimpse into mycology - the study of fungi - while shedding light on various aspects such as disease progression and medical interventions.
