Female and young mountain gorilla
Mountain gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei) female and young. Mountain gorillas are found in cloud forests high on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes between Rwanda, Uganda and Zaire. High elevation and rainfall makes this habitat wet and cold. The adults eat many kilograms of roots, leaves and stems daily, and can exceed 2 metres in height. Mountain gorillas reproduce slowly and are vulnerable to habitat destruction, poaching and war, making them highly endangered. Infants stay with their mothers for 3 to 4 years. Photographed in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the beauty and vulnerability of a female mountain gorilla and her young offspring. The image showcases the unique habitat of these incredible creatures, found in the cloud forests high on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes between Rwanda, Uganda, and Zaire. Despite their majestic appearance, mountain gorillas face numerous threats including habitat destruction, poaching, and war which have pushed them to the brink of extinction. The photograph highlights the close bond between mother and child as infants stay with their mothers for 3 to 4 years. These gentle giants are known for their slow reproductive rate, making it even more crucial to protect their fragile existence. Towering at over 2 meters in height, adult mountain gorillas consume large quantities of roots, leaves, and stems daily to sustain themselves in this wet and cold environment. Located within Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda's lush landscape, this image serves as a reminder of our responsibility to conserve these magnificent animals. With its rich vegetation serving as a backdrop for this family scene, we are reminded that every effort must be made to preserve not only these remarkable creatures but also their delicate ecosystem. Through this powerful visual narrative captured by Science Photo Library's lens, we gain insight into the world of mountain gorillas - an endangered species whose survival depends on our collective actions towards conservation efforts.
