Discovery of nylon, 1941 re-enactment C018 / 0675

Discovery of nylon, 1941 re-enactment. DuPont chemist Julian Hill (1904-1996) carrying out a re-enactment in 1941 of the discovery of nylon in 1935. A glass rod is being used to pull threads from the sample prepared in a glass tube. This discovery was made at DuPonts Experimental Station near Wilmington, Delaware. Hill was a member of the team, along with other chemists. The molasses-like mass stuck to the glass stirring rod and was drawn out into a thin fibre. After more research and development, DuPont was able to commercialise the new material. Production started in 1939, twelve years after the research program had started in 1927

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to a significant moment in history - the discovery of nylon. In 1941, DuPont chemist Julian Hill re-enacts the groundbreaking experiment that led to the creation of this revolutionary material. Standing in a laboratory at DuPont's Experimental Station near Wilmington, Delaware, Hill carefully pulls threads from a glass tube using a glass rod. The image captures both the excitement and meticulousness of scientific research during this era. As Hill draws out the molasses-like substance into thin fibers, one can only imagine the anticipation he must have felt for what would become an iconic textile innovation. Nylon's journey from its initial discovery in 1935 to commercialization in 1939 was no easy feat. This photo serves as a testament to years of dedicated research and development by Hill and his team of brilliant chemists. Their pioneering work laid the foundation for advancements in materials science and technology that continue to shape our world today. In this snapshot frozen in time, we witness not just a man carrying out an experiment but also an embodiment of human ingenuity and perseverance. It is through such moments that history is made - when individuals push boundaries, challenge conventions, and unlock new possibilities for generations to come. As we gaze upon this remarkable photograph, we are reminded of how far we have come since those early days of nylon's discovery - thanks to visionaries like Julian Hill who dared to dream big and change our world forever.
