EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th-century artwork captures the picturesque beauty of Cork Harbour, a natural harbor and estuary nestled along the coast of County Cork, Ireland. The print showcases a panoramic view looking south from Cobh (formerly known as Queenstown), situated on the southern shore of Great Island. The eye is immediately drawn to the iconic Roches Point lighthouse standing proudly at the exit of this bustling harbor. Fort Westmoreland on Spike Island and Fort Camden perched atop the headland behind it add an air of historical significance to this maritime scene. Haulbowline island takes center stage amidst numerous sailing ships and paddle steamers gracefully gliding through the bay. Notable structures such as Cunard Line's emigration offices, which witnessed countless farewells and new beginnings, are also depicted in intricate detail. It is worth mentioning that Queenstown was honored with a visit from none other than RMS Titanic during its ill-fated maiden voyage in 1912. Created by J. Brenann in 1872, this exquisite lithograph transports us back to an era when trade thrived upon these waters and life bustled along its shores. From fashionable Europeans strolling through town to sailors diligently manning their vessels, every figure within this monochrome masterpiece adds depth to our understanding of history. As we admire this remarkable piece from LIBRARY OF CONGRESS/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY's collection, we are reminded not only of Cork Harbour's rich heritage but also its enduring charm that continues to captivate visitors today.
