Bronze Age village, 19th century artwork
Bronze Age village. 19th century artwork of a prehistoric Swiss village and its inhabitants in a lake. This image is based on discoveries made from lake settlements in Switzerland and its neighbouring countries, dating mainly from the Neolithic (stone age) period and Bronze Age (end of 5th century to beginning of 1st century BC). It is thought that humans living during this period would have built huts like these in lakes, to increase their safety from predators and other humans. The actual layout and design of such villages is unknown. Image from Primitive Man, published in 1876 by Louis Figuier (1819-1894)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th-century artwork depicts a Bronze Age village nestled in the picturesque Swiss countryside. Based on archaeological discoveries from lake settlements in Switzerland and its neighboring countries, this image offers a glimpse into the lives of prehistoric inhabitants during the Neolithic and Bronze Age periods. The illustration portrays a community thriving amidst nature's beauty, with mountains towering majestically in the background. Stilt huts, assumed to be built by these ancient humans for protection against predators and other tribes, dot the lakeside. The actual layout and design of such villages remain unknown, making this depiction both theoretical and hypothetical. A bridge connects two parts of the village, symbolizing unity among its residents. Men, women, children - all are present in this snapshot of primitive life. A family is seen aboard a boat on the tranquil lake waters while others go about their daily activities within their homes. Created by Louis Figuier as part of his publication "Primitive Man" in 1876, this artwork showcases not only historical accuracy but also artistic prowess. It serves as an invaluable resource for anthropologists and archaeologists studying our ancestors' cultural heritage. As we gaze upon this print from Science Photo Library's collection today, we are transported back to an era long gone yet forever imprinted on humanity's timeline – reminding us of our roots and igniting curiosity about those who came before us.
