Balloon angioplasty, X-rays C016 / 6587

Balloon angioplasty. Coloured angiograms (X-rays) of the leg of a 69 year old patient with stenosis (narrowing, indicated by arrow at left) of the popliteal artery. The image at right shows the stenosis being treated with balloon angioplasty. A balloon catheter (white tube) has been guided into place by a flexible catheter (white line). Inflating the balloon opens the artery and restores normal blood flow. The most common cause of stenosis is atheroma, fatty deposits that thicken the inner coat of arteries

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate process of balloon angioplasty, a medical procedure used to treat stenosis in the popliteal artery. The image captures the leg of a 69-year-old patient, highlighting the narrowing of the artery indicated by an arrow on the left side. In this innovative treatment, a white tube known as a balloon catheter is guided into place by a flexible catheter represented by a white line. The photograph beautifully illustrates how inflating the balloon opens up the narrowed artery and restores normal blood flow. This groundbreaking technique offers hope for patients suffering from stenosis caused by fatty deposits called atheroma that thicken arterial walls. The profile view provides an intimate glimpse into this critical medical intervention, emphasizing both its complexity and potential life-saving impact. With its vibrant colors and detailed imagery, this print not only serves as an educational tool but also highlights advancements in modern medicine. As we observe this image, we are reminded of both our vulnerability and resilience as human beings. It is through procedures like balloon angioplasty that healthcare professionals can effectively address conditions such as stenosis and improve patients' quality of life. This photograph encapsulates science's ability to transform lives while showcasing ZEPHYR/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY's commitment to capturing powerful visuals that inspire awe and understanding in equal measure.
