Artwork of Korolev rocket glider C016 / 7639

Rocket glider. Artwork showing the construction of a Soviet RP-318 rocket-powered glider. This was based on the SK-9 designed by Sergei Korolev (1907-66) and was built in 1936. The structure was mainly wood covered with treated fabric. The ORM-65 rocket motor, designed by Vladimir Glushko, generated between 600 and 1750 Newtons thrust fuelled by a mixture of nitric acid and kerosene. When Korolev and Glushko were both arrested during Stalins purges, work on the project ended. It was restarted in 1940 and on 28 February a slightly modified version, the RP-318-1, made its first powered flight

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable artwork of the Korolev rocket glider C016/7639, a Soviet masterpiece in aerospace engineering. The image depicts the construction process of this groundbreaking rocket-powered glider, which was based on Sergei Korolev's SK-9 design and built in 1936. Crafted primarily from wood and covered with treated fabric, this prototype embodied innovation and ingenuity. Its ORM-65 rocket motor, ingeniously designed by Vladimir Glushko, generated an impressive thrust ranging from 600 to 1750 Newtons. Fueled by a potent mixture of nitric acid and kerosene, this liquid-powered marvel promised unparalleled flight capabilities. However, amidst Stalin's purges, both Korolev and Glushko were unjustly arrested, abruptly halting progress on this extraordinary project. Fortunately, in 1940 work resumed on an improved version named RP-318-1. On February 28th of that year, history was made as the modified glider successfully completed its inaugural powered flight. The intricate diagram featured within the artwork provides a glimpse into the meticulous craftsmanship behind this Russian aircraft marvel. It symbolizes not only technological advancement but also resilience in the face of adversity. This print serves as a testament to Sergei Korolev's brilliance as an aerospace engineer and Vladimir Glushko's innovative contributions to propulsion systems. It captures a pivotal moment in aviation history when human determination triumphed over political turmoil – paving the way for future advancements
