Amundsens Gjoa expedition, 1906
Amundsens Gjoa expedition. Members of crew and others on deck of the ship Gjoa, commanded by Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen (1872-1928, in foreground at left). On this expedition, between 1903 and 1906, Amundsen and a crew of six became the first to sail through the icy Northwest Passage between Canada and the Arctic. The crew spent three winters in the Arctic during this expedition. Beaten to the North Pole by Robert Peary in 1910, Amundsens most famous achievement came when he reached the South Pole ahead of Captain Scotts ill-fated team in 1911. Photographed at Nome, in western Alaska, on 1 September 1906

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history - the Amundsens Gjoa expedition of 1906. In the foreground, we see Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen, the commander of this groundbreaking voyage, standing on deck with a determined gaze. Surrounding him are members of his crew and other individuals who joined them on their daring journey through the icy Northwest Passage. The photograph was taken at Nome, in western Alaska, marking a pivotal point in their three-year-long Arctic adventure. The ship Gjoa stands tall behind them, its rigging and spars reaching towards the sky as a testament to both its strength and vulnerability against the harsh elements. Amundsen's expedition holds immense historical significance as they were the first to successfully navigate through this treacherous passage between Canada and the Arctic. Although beaten to the North Pole by Robert Peary later on, it was Amundsen's triumph when he reached the South Pole ahead of Captain Scott's ill-fated team that cemented his place in exploration history. As we observe this remarkable image from over a century ago, we are reminded of these brave explorers' resilience and determination amidst extreme conditions. It serves as an enduring symbol of human curiosity and our relentless pursuit for discovery in uncharted territories.
