Agriculture in the Neolithic Era

Coloured illustration of the Neolithic Era, circa 7000BC to 2500BC when animals were domesticated, agriculture introduced, pottery and clothing made. Polished stone implements for grinding, cutting and chopping evolved. To the left a herdsman drives a pig a cow and a goat. In the centre a woman grinds wheat to make flour using a primitive mill consisting of a sloping stone with a trough and a smaller convex stone. The ears of wheat are place in the trough. The woman leans all her weight on the smaller stone and presses it forward. The ground wheat falls from the sloping stone on to a cloth placed to collect it. A dog is at her side. The children on her left are heating flat stones in the fire. When the stones are hot enough they are removed using damp sticks. The flour is mixed with water. This dough is placed between the hot stones to make round flat unleavened loaves

Agriculture Children Flour Goat Polished Stone Tools Wheat Baking Bread Domesticated Animals Herdsman

EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured illustration takes us back to the Neolithic Era, a pivotal period in human history when significant advancements were made. Around 7000BC to 2500BC, our ancestors witnessed the domestication of animals, introduction of agriculture, and the birth of various essential practices. In this scene, we are transported to a small settlement where daily life unfolds. To the left stands a herdsman skillfully guiding his precious livestock - a pig, cow, and goat. These animals represent not only sustenance but also companionship for early humans. At the center of attention is a woman engrossed in grinding wheat using an ingenious primitive mill. With utmost precision and effort, she leans on a smaller convex stone that presses forward against another sloping stone with troughs holding ears of wheat. The ground flour cascades onto a cloth carefully placed beneath it. Beside her loyal companion dog sits patiently while children gather around heated stones being prepared for baking bread. As they heat these flat stones over an open fire using damp sticks as tools, their anticipation grows for warm unleavened loaves made from mixing water with freshly ground flour. This snapshot offers us glimpses into how our ancestors harnessed nature's resources and developed innovative techniques during this transformative era. It reminds us of humanity's unwavering spirit to adapt and thrive through ingenuity and collaboration - qualities that continue to shape our modern world today.
