Aders flying machine, 19th century

Aders flying machine. Clement Ader (1841-1926) was a French engineer and aviation pioneer who invented numerous electrical and mechanical devices. Ader constructed his first flying machine, the Eole, a steam-powered bat-like design, in 1886, flying 50 metres in it in 1890. Ader later built the Avion II and the Avion III. The Avion III is said to have flown 300 metres in 1897, but the French Army were not impressed and withdrew funding. Unlike the Wright brothers, Aders flights were not controlled. Artwork from the eighth volume (second period of 1891) of the French popular science weekly La Science Illustree

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable invention of Clement Ader, a pioneering French engineer and aviation genius. In the late 19th century, Ader revolutionized the world of flight with his groundbreaking flying machine, known as the Eole. The image captures the essence of Ader's steam-powered creation, resembling a bat-like structure suspended in mid-air. With its propeller spinning vigorously, this technological marvel took flight in 1890, covering an impressive distance of 50 meters. However, unlike their successors - the Wright brothers - Ader's flights were not fully controlled. Ader's relentless pursuit continued with subsequent models such as Avion II and Avion III. The latter is said to have soared for an astonishing 300 meters in 1897. Unfortunately, despite these significant achievements, Ader faced disappointment when funding from the French Army was withdrawn due to their lack of enthusiasm. This historical artwork hails from La Science Illustree magazine's eighth volume published in 1891. It beautifully encapsulates both human ingenuity and artistic expression through intricate detailing and shading techniques. Clement Ader's legacy lives on as he remains one of history's most influential figures in aviation technology. His unwavering determination paved the way for future advancements that would ultimately shape modern air travel as we know it today.
