EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print captures the construction of the gasworks at Lemon Quay in Truro, Cornwall, before 1902. The image showcases a significant moment in the city's industrial history as it depicts the early stages of building infrastructure to provide gas for its residents. At that time, coal was transported by river to fuel the operations of Truro Gas Company. In 1936, new gas offices were opened on Boscawen Street, marking a shift in location and further development within the industry. This change was reported by Royal Cornwall Gazette on April 1st of that year. However, it wasn't until 1948 when nationalization took place that a larger gasworks facility was constructed at Newham. The photographer behind this snapshot remains unknown but has managed to capture not only an important milestone in Truro's energy sector but also provides us with a glimpse into its past industrial landscape. The photograph serves as a reminder of how cities evolve over time and adapt their energy sources to meet growing demands. Today, this historical site stands as a testament to Truro's progress and transformation while reminding us of the crucial role played by industries such as gas works in powering our cities' growth and development throughout history.
