EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1901, capturing a moment in time at Central Board School in St Columb Major, Cornwall. The image showcases a group of young pupils, both boys and girls, posing for the camera with their teacher holding a chalkboard. Amongst them is Reginald Colwell James, born in 1890 and later becoming an esteemed member of the Institute of Mining Engineers. Reginald's presence is marked by his position on the right-hand side of the boy clutching the chalkboard. His journey through education began at Hendersons Mining School in Truro before he moved on to this prestigious institution. In subsequent years, records show him residing at Hillside in Tregurrian, St Columb Minor. As time went by, Reginald sought new horizons and opportunities beyond Cornwall's borders. By 1936 he had relocated to Kearsley Road in Reading, Berkshire. This photograph serves as a testament to his formative years spent within these hallowed school walls. Preserved by photographer F. C. Elger from Falmouth, this snapshot offers us a glimpse into early twentieth-century education and highlights one individual's path towards professional success.
