The Auxiliary Naval Hospital, Tregolls Road, Truro, Cornwall. 1918
A wounded man on a stretcher being unloaded from an ambulance by Red Cross nursing staff at the Royal Naval Auxiliary Hospital. The patients at these hospitals were generally less seriously wounded than at other hospitals and they needed to convalesce. The service men preferred the auxiliary hospitals to military hospitals because they were not so strict, they were less crowded and the surroundings were more homely. The Auxiliary Naval Hospital - A Haven of Healing in Truro, Cornwall. 1918
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this poignant print captured by Arthur William Jordan, we are transported back to the year 1918, amidst the chaos and devastation of World War One. The scene unfolds at the Royal Naval Auxiliary Hospital on Tregolls Road in Truro, Cornwall. Here, a wounded soldier lies on a stretcher as he is gently unloaded from an ambulance by compassionate Red Cross nursing staff. These dedicated women clad in their distinctive uniforms epitomize selflessness and care during a time of immense suffering. The patients fortunate enough to find solace within these walls were those with less severe injuries who required time to convalesce before returning to active duty or civilian life. Unlike military hospitals that often imposed strict rules and endured overcrowding, auxiliary hospitals like this one offered a more welcoming environment - homely surroundings where soldiers could heal both physically and emotionally. Cornwall's picturesque landscape provided a soothing backdrop for these brave servicemen as they embarked on their journey towards recovery. Amidst the turmoil of war, moments like these served as reminders of humanity's capacity for compassion and resilience. This image serves as an enduring testament to the invaluable role played by nurses during times of conflict - their unwavering dedication providing comfort and hope when it was needed most.
