In this photograph from the 1966 Spa 1000 kms race at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium, Lucien Bianchi, driving for Ecurie Francorchamps, takes the lead in his Ferrari 365 P2, skillfully maneuvering through the twists and turns of the legendary circuit. Hot on his heels are Peter Revson and Skip Scott in the Essex Wire Corporation Ford GT40, and Chris Amon and Innes Ireland in the F. English Racing Ltd. Ford GT40. The 1966 Spa 1000 kms was a grueling endurance race, with drivers and their machines pushed to the limit as they navigated the challenging 14.1 kilometer (8.75 mile) track. The race was a pivotal moment in the 1966 World Sportscar Championship season, with the Ford GT40 and Ferrari 365 P2 battling for supremacy. Bianchi, a talented Belgian driver with a storied career, had already amassed several victories in sports car racing, including the 1961 24 Hours of Le Mans. He would unfortunately meet a tragic end just a few years later in a racing accident, making this photograph a poignant reminder of his racing prowess. Revson and Scott, driving for the American Essex Wire Corporation team, were no slouches themselves, having finished second in the 1965 24 Hours of Le Mans. Amon and Ireland, representing the F. English Racing Ltd. team, were also formidable competitors, having won the 1965 12 Hours of Sebring. This photograph captures the intensity and excitement of the 1966 Spa 1000 kms race, with the three drivers locked in a fierce battle for position, the roar of their engines echoing through the Belgian countryside.
