Sir Alan Cobham climbing out of a De Havilland D.H.50 at Croydon Airport on 17th March 1925.
He had returned from a trip of 17, 000 miles with Sir Sefton Brancker, the Director of Civil Aviation that had taken them close to four months.
The Director had gone to India to report on the possibility of establishing facilities for Airships.
Cobham was shocked to learn that he was to travel by sea, because of Government budgetary constraints, and so the aviator raised the finances to enable him to be flown instead.
They left Stag Lane aerodrome in North London on 20th November 1924, travelled through Europe at a leisurely pace before arriving in Karachi at the end of the year. After India, Brancker decided to go on to Rangoon, Burma from where the return journey commenced on 28th February. 4science - Academic / Education - 25/02/2010

EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir Alan Cobham, the fearless aviator, emerges triumphantly from the cockpit of a De Havilland D. H. 50 at Croydon Airport on 17th March 1925. This iconic photograph captures the end of an extraordinary journey that spanned over 17,000 miles and nearly four months. Accompanied by Sir Sefton Brancker, Director of Civil Aviation, Cobham embarked on this daring expedition to explore the possibility of establishing airship facilities in India. However, budgetary constraints forced them to travel by sea initially. Determined to conquer the skies instead, Cobham raised funds to enable their airborne adventure. Their epic voyage commenced on 20th November 1924 from Stag Lane aerodrome in North London. They leisurely traversed Europe before reaching Karachi at year's end. After completing their mission in India, Brancker decided to extend their journey further eastward towards Rangoon in Burma. With goggles shielding his eyes and donning a leather coat and helmet for protection against the elements, Sir Alan Cobham became an emblematic figure of early aviation exploration during this historic era. This image serves as a testament to human ingenuity and perseverance in pushing boundaries beyond what was deemed possible at that time. It immortalizes one man's determination to soar through the heavens amidst technological limitations and financial obstacles.
