Children playing dustbins on a slum housing estate 1st June 1962

Children playing dustbins on a slum housing estate 1st June 1962.
Taken from a set of pictures showing slum housing in post war Britain. These pictures were taken to highlight the plight of many families in Britain who even into the sixties were forced by economic factors to live in slum dwellings. In London much of the slum housing was destroyed in the Blitz. However, other British cities particularly in the North and Midlands had large scale housing problems. After the WW2 much of the rebuilding concentrated on the South East as it had been hit hardest by the Luftwaffe. However, these cities with existing and pressing housing problems were to an extent left alone. As a result local councils couldn t afford to clear away neglected and cramped properties. Slum housing was often poorly heated and ventilated, structurally unsound, very cramped (a condition worsened by the fact that they were often inhabited by large families) and often isolated from services and amenities

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a poignant moment in the lives of children living on a slum housing estate on 1st June 1962. Taken from a series of pictures that aimed to shed light on the harsh reality faced by many families in post-war Britain, it serves as a stark reminder of the economic hardships endured during this era. While London's slum housing was largely destroyed during the Blitz, other cities across the North and Midlands still grappled with extensive housing problems. The aftermath of World War II saw significant rebuilding efforts focused primarily on the South East, leaving these already struggling areas neglected. The image depicts children finding joy and amusement amidst their challenging circumstances by playfully engaging with dustbins. These dilapidated dwellings were often poorly heated, lacking proper ventilation and structurally unsound. Moreover, they were cramped spaces that exacerbated their inhabitants' struggles due to large family sizes. Isolated from essential services and amenities, these communities faced an uphill battle for improved living conditions. Local councils struggled financially to clear away neglected properties, perpetuating the cycle of poverty for those residing within them. This photograph stands as a powerful testament to resilience in adversity while shedding light on an important chapter in British history – one where families fought against economic constraints and lived through unimaginable hardships within these slums.
