EDITORS COMMENTS
Zeppelin Raids: Dangers to Avoid (1915) During the early years of the First World War, German Zeppelin airships carried out a series of raids on civilian populations in Britain, sowing terror and destruction. In this evocative image from 1915, we see the aftermath of such an attack on a busy street. On the left, a panicked crowd gathers as a large pane of glass from a shattered window falls to the ground. The danger posed by falling glass during Zeppelin raids was a very real one, with shards of glass causing numerous injuries and fatalities. Witnesses reported hearing the ominous sound of breaking glass as bombs exploded nearby, signaling the imminent danger. On the right, we see the importance of taking cover behind walls during such attacks. The image shows a man and a child huddled against a solid brick wall, seeking protection from the flying debris and explosions. Walls provided a degree of shelter, reducing the risk of injury or death. This powerful photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the dangers faced by civilians during the Zeppelin raids of World War I. It underscores the importance of being aware of one's surroundings and taking appropriate measures to protect oneself and one's loved ones during times of conflict.
