1480 1525 Died Inca Peru Small Pox Tito Cusi Huayna Wayna
EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the enigmatic figure of Wayna Qhapaq, also known as Huayna Ccapac or Tito Cusi Hualpa, the last great emperor of the Inca Empire in Peru. Born around 1480, Wayna Qhapaq ascended to the throne in 1525 following the death of his father, Huayna Capac. His reign was marked by a period of relative peace and prosperity, as well as significant expansion of the Inca Empire, which at its height covered much of present-day Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Chile. However, Wayna Qhapaq's reign was tragically cut short by the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors, led by Pizarro, in 1532. Despite initial resistance, the Inca were no match for the Europeans' superior technology and weaponry. Wayna Qhapaq is believed to have died of smallpox in 1527, several years before the Spanish invasion, although some accounts suggest he may have succumbed to the disease during the conflict. This print, from the esteemed Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the enigmatic and complex figure of Wayna Qhapaq. The emperor is depicted here in traditional Inca attire, with a ceremonial headdress adorned with feathers and gold, and a flowing tunic. His regal bearing and intense gaze convey a sense of strength and determination, reflecting the powerful legacy of the Inca civilization. Despite the tragic circumstances of his death, Wayna Qhapaq remains an important figure in the history of the Andes, and his legacy continues to inspire generations of Peruvians and scholars alike. This image serves as a poignant reminder of the rich cultural heritage of the Inca Empire and the complexities of its history.
