EDITORS COMMENTS
Thomas Mortimer: A Prominent Figure in 18th Century Economics and Literature This portrait captures the intellectual brilliance and distinguished air of Thomas Mortimer (1730-1810), a British writer and economist of the 18th century. Mortimer's contributions to the fields of economics and literature left a lasting impact on his time and continue to be studied and appreciated today. Born in London, Mortimer's early education was in the classics and law, but his true passion lay in economics and political theory. He began his career as a clerk in the British East India Company, but soon left to pursue a life of writing and scholarship. Mortimer's most notable works include "An Essay on the Trade and Natural Resources of the North of England" (1774) and "An Essay on the External Obligations of Great Britain" (1778), which offered innovative insights into the economic potential of the Northern regions of England and the international trade policies of Great Britain, respectively. Mortimer's literary pursuits were equally impressive. He wrote plays, poems, and essays, and was a prolific translator of works from Latin and Greek. His translation of Plutarch's "Lives" was particularly well-received, and remains a valuable resource for scholars today. Despite his many accomplishments, Mortimer's life was not without its challenges. He faced financial difficulties and was forced to sell his library to pay his debts. However, he remained dedicated to his work and continued to write and publish until his death in 1810. This portrait, taken in the late 18th century, captures Mortimer in the prime of his career, with a thoughtful expression and a pen in hand, symbolizing his lifelong commitment to the written word and the pursuit of knowledge. Thomas Mortimer's legacy as a writer and economist continues to inspire and inform scholars and students of history, economics, and literature.
