EDITORS COMMENTS
Thomas Lord Fairfax (1612-1671): A Prominent Figure in the English Civil War This striking portrait captures Thomas Lord Fairfax, the third baron Fairfax of Emley, a pivotal figure in the English Civil War. Born in 1612 to Ferdinando Fairfax, 2nd Lord Fairfax of Emley, Thomas was raised in a noble family with deep roots in Yorkshire. However, it was his military and political prowess that would make him a significant historical figure. During the English Civil War, Fairfax emerged as a leading parliamentary commander and statesman. His military career began in 1642 when he joined the Eastern Association Army under the command of the Earl of Manchester. Fairfax's strategic mind and courageous leadership were soon recognized, and he was appointed as the commander-in-chief of the New Model Army in 1645. Under Fairfax's command, the New Model Army achieved a series of decisive victories, including the Battle of Naseby in 1645, which is considered a turning point in the war. Fairfax's military successes were not limited to the battlefield. He also played a crucial role in the political arena, advocating for a constitutional government and the establishment of the Commonwealth of England. Despite his significant contributions to the parliamentary cause, Fairfax faced challenges in the post-war period. His support for the execution of King Charles I and his opposition to Oliver Cromwell's growing power led to his exclusion from political office. Fairfax retired from public life and died in 1671, leaving behind a complex and enduring legacy as a military commander and statesman during the English Civil War.
