The tomb of Thomas Guy in the chapel at Guys hospital. Born in 1644, he completed his education and went on to represent Tamworth in Parliament. He then moved to London and spent eight years as a booksellers apprentice. Through his astute business sense he made his fortune with investments and printing. In 1704 Guy was appointed Director of St Thomass Hospital and through his donations paid for three new wards. At the age of 76, he founded Guys Hospital, on a site near London Bridge. He died four years later, leaving a large fund for the hospital
