Choice Ohio Peoples Twelfth Waggon

EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "The Peoples' Choice: Thomas Corwin, the Waggon Boy of Ohio, and His Unrealized Presidency" This evocative portrait captures the likeness of Thomas Corwin (1794-1862), a prominent figure in American politics during the mid-19th century. Known as "the Waggon Boy of Ohio," Corwin rose from humble beginnings to become a respected statesman and the People's choice for the Twelfth President of the United States. Born in a log cabin in Ohio, Corwin's early life was marked by hardship and determination. He worked as a teamster, driving a wagon to transport goods, before dedicating himself to education and the law. Corwin's perseverance paid off, and he was elected to the Ohio State Senate in 1828. Over the next several decades, he served in various capacities, including as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senator. Corwin's political career was marked by a strong commitment to the Union and the abolition of slavery. He was a vocal opponent of the Mexican-American War, believing it to be an unconstitutional expansion of federal power. In the 1850s, Corwin emerged as a leading figure in the newly formed Republican Party, which sought to limit the expansion of slavery. In the presidential election of 1860, Corwin was the clear favorite among many Republicans. However, he ultimately lost the nomination to Abraham Lincoln. Despite this setback, Corwin continued to serve his country, acting as Secretary of the Treasury under President Lincoln during the early years of the Civil War. This striking portrait, with its somber yet resolute expression, captures the essence of Thomas Corwin's life and legacy. Though he did not achieve the presidency, Corwin's unwavering commitment to his beliefs and his dedication to the Union left a lasting impact on American history.
